So far it has been sometimes wet and sometimes windy, but there has always been enough sun and enough great people to make the experience of this challenge a fantastic event so far. We’re hoping for a final day that tops it all and there are still a few tickets left if you want to be part of it…

This is a fantastic opportunity to join walkers on the 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge for part of their walk.

This final day of the challenge walk begins at County Gate – the border with Devon. We join the South West Coast Path and start our journey back to Porlock. Our route takes us through shady woodland with crystal clear streams and waterfalls. The south Wales coast is visible through the trees as we make our way towards Culbone Church (St Beuno’s) and Porlock Weir.

Culbone Church is known for being the smallest complete parish church in England. Pre-Norman in origin, it sits in the woods, and is only accessible on foot. Leaving the church, firs and exotic pines on the hillside indicate where Ashley Combe, an Italianate style mansion with breath-taking views across the Bristol Channel, once stood. It was once the home of Ada Byron, a gifted mathematician and daughter of the celebrated poet.

Continuing on the trail you pass through two short tunnels, once part of the mansion’s grand italian garden, before reaching the Lodge now the Toll House for the Worthy Toll Road, that enables cars to avoid driving up (or down) the infamous Porlock Hill.

Finally, you see Porlock marsh ahead as you head down into the village of Porlock Weir with its bustling harbourside hotels, pubs and cafes, before heading to the marshes and Porlock to end the Somerset Coast 80 Miles in Eight Days Challenge.

Along the entire Challenge route there are stamping stations for the Somerset & Exmoor Coast Trail Passport with maps, diary pages and spaces to collect stamps on your walk.

Look out for events, offers and promotions at the location of the walk each day, some of our supporters are timing activities to make your trip as enjoyable as possible with special treats such as packed lunches or cream teas available at the start or end of your day’s walking.

Due to the challenge nature for some participants of this walk, we have made the decision not to accept dogs on the walk.

Full details of the itinerary and walk leaders will be distributed prior to the start of the challenge.

Itinerary:

We meet at the end point of your day’s walking at 9am, where there will be parking available. Here you will be joined by Walk Leaders and back-markers and driven to the start of the day’s trail to walk back to your car / transport.

At the start location walkers opting not to use our transport may join and, following a briefing for the day, the walk will begin.

Where public transport is available at start and / or end locations it is shown below as PTS (public transport available at the start) or PTE (public transport available at the end), this is based on services running as normal for the time of year.

Further information will be included in the walk information pack sent out before the walks.

Day 8 – County Gate to Porlock (Challenging) (PTS + PTE)

Terrain:

Day 8 is our last day and we are on the South West Coast Path again. With its more challenging hills and remote sections of path, and the walk has been kept shorter to accommodate this.
