Watchet & Blue Anchor

Watchet and Blue Anchor

This stretch of the King Charles III England Coast Path takes in the village of Doniford, the historic town of Watchet, and the coastal village of Blue Anchor. Just inland lie the villages of Williton, Washford, Old Cleeve, Chapel Cleeve, Bilbrook, and Carhampton. Nestled between the Quantock Hills National Landscape and Exmoor National Park—renowned for their sweeping, heather-clad hills—this area offers an ideal base for coastal walks and for exploring the stunning countryside beyond.

Arriving on the Coast Path from the Quantocks, you reach Doniford, where the remains of the Doniford Stone Cross come into view as you turn right onto the road. These wayside crosses, erected during the medieval period, were thought to symbolize an area’s Christian faith, offer reassurance to travellers, and serve as route markers. This particular cross is a Grade II* Listed monument, and the socket stone and part of the original shaft can be seen today.

From here, the trail crosses Helwell Bay—well known for its fossils—so be sure to check tide times to cross safely. The path then leads into Watchet, a vibrant coastal town with plenty to enjoy in any weather. With over a thousand years as a harbour town, Watchet is steeped in history, full of tales of Vikings, royalty, and even headless saints, alongside its charming and quirky architecture.

Leaving Watchet on the Coast Path, you’ll be treated to stunning views—looking back towards Watchet and the Quantock Hills, and ahead to Minehead and Exmoor. After roughly three miles, the route brings you to Blue Anchor, a popular spot for dog walkers, with its beautiful sand and shingle beach.
